Singapore crab buffet dessertsJuly 25, 2009
They have all sorts of pies and pastries at the amazing Singapore crab buffet including (really?) New York cheese cake. I guess cheese cake is exotic there.
This is a dessert called kueh dadar made fresh for the table by the chef. It’s some kind of coconut crepe. It looks intriguing.
It’s a traditional Peranakan dessert. What does that mean?
Peranakan and Baba-Nyonya (traditional Chinese: 峇峇娘惹; Hokkien: Bā-bā Niû-liá) are terms used for the descendants of late 15th and 16th century Chinese immigrants to the Nusantara region during the Colonial era. It applies especially to the ethnic Chinese populations of the British Straits Settlements of Malaya and the Dutch-controlled island of Java and other locations, who have adopted partially or in full Malay customs to be somewhat assimilated into the local communities.
The recipe looks like a crepe made with coconut milk ans stuffed with coconut and uses palm sugar. Mmmm…
